Coffee capsules: a revolution in the making or an ecological mirage?

It may seem counter-intuitive to some, but bean-to-cup or filter machines aren't always the most responsible way to drink coffee. Whether it's the amount of coffee used per cup, the way the water is heated, or the size of the machines, there are many factors that factor into the carbon impact of a cup of coffee, and make capsules a consumption method with a bright future. 1- the quantity of coffee per cup, the harsh reality:
The stage with the highest emissions is... grain cultivation! Over 40%. And that's where the capsule machine comes into its own.
Why do we use capsules? Because capsules reduce the amount of coffee, electricity and water used to make a coffee. In fact, a capsule coffee saves between 11 and 13 grams of coffee compared to a traditional filter coffee. The grinder is often considered to be the "greenest" machine, as it has no waste, but from a carbon point of view, the opposite is true, as it consumes a lot of coffee, between 8 and 15g per cup.
2- water heating, the tip of the iceberg
When you drink a filter or instant coffee, a significant proportion of the energy consumed is used to heat water that will not be used. With a capsule machine, only the necessary water is heated, thus optimizing energy consumption and the carbon impact of the coffee consumed. +1 point for the capsule.
3- Machine complexity, the ecological Trojan horse of our kitchens
Capsule machines like the Nespresso Pixie weigh around 2.8 kg, while bean-to-cup machines like the De'Longhi Magnifica weigh 9.2 kg. Roughly speaking, 3 capsule machines would have to be replaced by a single bean machine. In reality, this is not the case, and the ecological payback time of a grain machine is de facto much longer.
Of course, many other factors come into play, such as the energy mix in your region, etc...
However, in view of the issues surrounding the impact of coffee, we at Caps me, as engineers, have made 3 commitments:
