The false good ideas for drinking coffee and being eco-friendly

It may seem counter-intuitive to some, but bean-to-cup or filter machines aren't always the most responsible way to drink coffee. Whether it's the amount of coffee used per cup, the way the water is heated, or the size of the machines, there are many factors that factor into the carbon impact of a cup of coffee, and make capsules a consumption method with a bright future. We tell you all about it here:

(the sources and studies on which this article is based can be found at the bottom of the page)

1- The quantity of coffee

Switching to coffee beans may seem like a good idea at first glance, because it will reduce the amount of single-use packaging. True, but the amount of coffee per cup can be 30 to 80% higher than in a capsule.

But the most emitting stage is... the cultivation of the beans! For more than 40%. And this is where the capsule machine stands out from the others.

Why? Because capsules allow you to reduce the amount of coffee you use when preparing a coffee.

2- The weight of the machines

Additionally, capsule machines like the Nespresso® Pixie weigh around 2.8 kg, while bean-to-cup machines like the De'Longhi Magnifica weigh 9.2 kg. Roughly speaking, you'd have to replace three capsule machines with a single bean-to-cup machine. In reality, this isn't the case, and the ecological payback time for a bean-to-cup machine is significantly longer.

3- Pass to the filter

When you drink filter or instant coffee, a significant portion of the energy consumed goes toward heating water that won't be used . With a capsule machine, only the necessary water is heated, thus optimizing energy consumption and the carbon impact of the coffee consumed.

Throw away your capsule machine

At Caps me we wondered why throw away a capsule machine in the dump to buy another one , when it was designed to last and works very well? There are sustainable methods to continue using your capsule machine , we'll tell you about them right after.

Of course, many other factors come into play, such as the energy mix in your region, etc. However, faced with these challenges surrounding the impact of coffee, at Caps me, as engineers, we have made 3 commitments:

A pile of used coffee pods in various colors.

1- Reduce waste generated by coffee capsules

By offering reusable coffee capsules that are easy to fill using the shaker, we are drastically reducing single-use waste. This includes disposable capsules, as well as the industrial waste generated during their production, which is invisible to the consumer. Our reusable capsules eliminate both visible and invisible waste .

2- Encouraging more responsible coffee consumption

Our range of specialty coffees guarantees traceability to the producer's plot of land, as well as fair remuneration. Only 2% of the world's coffees meet these criteria.

3- To (re)emerge more ecologically sober hot beverages like Chicory, compatible with our reusable capsules.

Chicory lost its image as a grandmother's drink, consumed during the coffee shortages of the post-war years. It became a trendy product, and rightly so:

🌱 more environmentally friendly than coffee (5x less C02eq emissions than coffee, source Ademe)

🇫🇷 100% grown and processed in France

Just wait and see: in a few years, chicory will get an unprecedented makeover!
